Unit Plan Assignment: Online Collaboration Lesson There are several online collaborative tools that can be used to facilitate student learning. Davis (Laureate, 2009) shared a few of the social networking and online collaborative tools such as Moodle, ePals, and Wiggio. Often teachers are encouraged to go slow, take a small technology task and to be courage to take a risk in implementing new technology into classroom instructions. I am not totally familiar with these tools but have an awareness of their existence. Taking the above advice to try a small technology task, I am going to focus on using Wiki as a collaborative tool in my classroom. This is a tool I am learning and gaining more confident in using with my students. Also, I will give options with the use of email as a collaborative tool in my lesson.

Description of lesson:
To introduce the concepts of businesses keeping financial records students will begin to think about their own personal financial records or their families financial records.
Before Class Preparation:
Students will be introduced to Wikispaces.com. Groups will be arranged with three students per group – selected according to colored cards. Students will create their wiki accounts and send their links to me via email. A lesson on how to prepare a budget will be demonstrated and discussed. Students will be distributed a worksheet to estimate who much income they think their parents will need to make to meet the needs of their household. They will brainstorm what expenses exist in their home and if their families’ income will meet their needs.
Instructional Activities:
Students will be introduced to Wiki spaces. I will use a LCD projector to demonstrate how to access the site and how to create an account. While at the Wiki site I will model for students how to navigate through the different components of Wiki.
Students will select a colored coded card and will place themselves in groups according to the color card that they have selected.
Students will refer to the textbook lesson on keeping financial records and review how keeping a personal budget is the same concept of business keeping financial records. Students will review the importance of keeping personal financial records separate for business financial records.
Students will create a personal budget and post it on Wiki. Each member in groups of three will review each other’s budget and make comments as to how individuals can improve their budgets to increase their savings and balance their expenses with their income. As a group, students will agree whose budget is the best budget and explain why.
Students will use three class periods to complete this assignment. At the completion of the assignment students will present the best budget to the rest of the class and explain why this budget is the best. They must indicate any resources and use appropriate language learned from their resources.
Students may choose how their will present their final results. They will have the option of using the computer with a LCD projector to show the budget; they may use power point presentations, or they may choose to create poster board presentations. These options will accommodate students who are more comfortable with their chose of presentation tools.
Assessment/s
Students will be assessed for collaborating with Wiki assignment. They will be informed that I will check the Wiki account for their participation and will receive credit for their participation.
Students will be informed that their presentations will be assessed based on individual participations and not as a group. Each group member must share their view point on the best budget presented.
Students will also be informed that their presentations must reveal resources that affirms their information based on what they learned from their chapter lesson and any research that they conducted.
I will also visit each group as they are working and assist where needed.
Lesson Reflection/Portfolio:
Students will use their digital portfolio/reflection to record their thoughts with a prompt question or thought: “What have you learned about the importance of keeping a budget to keep out of debt?”
